The Lord of the Rings is one of the biggest projects in the history of cinema. Its implementation took eight years; all three films were filmed simultaneously in New Zealand, Peter Jackson's home country. The films follow the main storyline of the book but omit some essential narrative elements, include additions and deviations from the original material.
The plot of the trilogy follows the hobbit Frodo Baggins, who goes on a campaign with the Fellowship of the Ring in order to destroy the Ring of Omnipotence. This is necessary to defeat its creator, the Dark Lord Sauron, who conceived the capture of Middle-earth. The Brotherhood breaks up, and Frodo continues his journey with Sam and Gollum. Meanwhile, his comrades, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Gandalf unite the Free Peoples of Middle-earth to oppose Sauron in the War of the Ring.
The trilogy was a major financial success and is one of the highest grossing film series. The films were positively received by critics and won 17 Oscars out of 30 nominations. The final film in the trilogy, The Return of the King won all 11 Oscars it was nominated for. Which is the record number of Academy Awards for a single film (in the entire history, only two films could receive the same number of statuettes: Ben-Hur by William Wyler and Titanic by James Cameron).
